Hire a Washington DC Public Adjuster
If you own a rowhouse, condo, or commercial building in the District and your property insurance claim was underpaid or denied, a Washington DC Public Adjuster can help you document the loss and pursue the settlement your policy actually owes you.
What is a Public Adjuster?
A Public Adjuster is a licensed insurance claim expert hired by policyholders — not by insurance companies — to handle first-party property damage claims. Under the District's Public Insurance Adjuster Licensure Act, a Washington DC Public Adjuster can investigate your loss, interpret your policy, and negotiate the settlement of your claim on your behalf. The adjuster your carrier sends works for the carrier. A Public Adjuster works only for you.
Are Washington DC Public Adjusters licensed?
Yes. Public Insurance Adjusters in the District are licensed by the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) in two-year terms. Applicants must post a $20,000 surety bond and submit their client contract to the Department for approval before adjusting a District claim. You can verify any license through DISB's online licensee lookup before you sign anything.
How much does a DC Public Adjuster charge?
The District enforces one of the strictest fee caps in the country. DC law bars a Public Adjuster from charging more than 10% of your total insurance recovery. Fees are contingency-based, so there is no out-of-pocket cost. DC also gives you the right to cancel a Public Adjuster contract until midnight on the third business day after you sign.
